1. How To Copy A Text To A Virtual Machine Online

Is there an easy way I can copy files directly from my machine to the virtual machine? I have downloaded a lot of .HTML files on my desktop and I need them on the virtual machine, I noticed that I cannot just copy and paste there. If that doesn't work (copy/paste) I am sure there is a way to share the files I cannot remember.

Additional Info:I am using a Windows XP machine. I am connected to a virtual machine through Windows Remote Desktop Connection. The VM I am connected to is Windows 64-bit also XP machine.

If the two machines are networked, why not just make a standard windows share from one machine accessible by the other?

1. Open Remote Desktop and click the Local Resources tab
2. Check the Clipboard box and click More..
3. Check Drives and click OK

Now when you connect, you will be able to copy and paste files directly from the local machine to the remote machine.

Whereas the clipboard works for copying and pasting basic content such as text (assuming clipboard sharing is enabled), sharing disk drives via the Local Resources tab is the key to being able to seamlessly copy and paste files across Remote Desktop.

Rather than give you a specific solution, judging by the way you have asked the question I think it may be more helpful for you to fundamentally see things in a way which you should.

Forget that it is a VM. You can connect to it in all the same ways that you can with any other machine on your LAN, including from the host which runs the VM.

So just use network shares, or whatever other method you would usually use between two locally networked machines.

Open the file system of remote machine using run. Steps are:

• click on Start -> run
• Type IP addresss of remote machine
• type user id and password

Now you can see remote machine file system in explorer.In the addres bar type: ip_addressC$this will open the C drive of remote machine. Now you can paste the file here or traverse any other location and paste files. No need to share disk or folders.

A possible solution would be to save your files to a USB flash drive and then unplug and replug the device while you are in your VM's session. The VM should recognize it and you should be able to copy the files thus.

Well if the VM you are connect to has an internet connection, you can use any number of online services to upload your files from the local machine and download them to the virtual machine. Some services you can use to upload files online are:

You can also zip your files and upload them to GoogleDocs, even if they are not in a standard GoogleDocs format. Upto 1 GB of files are allowed by GoogleDocs.

You can copy and past over a RDP connection. But it is also possible to disable it. Make sure, on the local resources tab, that you check the Clipboard.

While you are connected to the VM, you'll see a processes called RDPclip.exe or something similar. Kill it and restart it on the other side and see if that helps.

For Microsoft systems it is possible to have copy paste option from host to virtual system. I have done with XP as host and 2003 enterprise edition as virtual machine. But i had used Microsoft Virtual PC for that..

Use Edit of Virtual PC software for simply drag the file from host to desktop of virtual system.

Thats it.now you can copy data to VM and VM to local machine

Repeat this untill you get it.

Simply copy any file from local system, and paste it on the VM- virtual machine's desktop, You can then use it.

I am trying to copy and paste from my pc to the vm but i cant.

I also enable copy and paste but i still can't copy and paste from my pc to the vm. My pc runs windows 8.1 my vm has fedora.

You need to install VMware Tools on your vm:

To install VMware Tools in most VMware products:

Power on the virtual machine.

Log in to the virtual machine using an account with Administrator or root privileges.

Wait for the desktop to load and be ready.

Here is a small hint that I hope might be useful to other poor saps that experienced the same issue as I did.

My Setup:Host: Windows 7 Enterprise - build 7601 SP 1VM: VMware® Workstation 12 Player 12.1.1 build-3770994 (free)Guest: Fedora release 23

I naively failed to install open-vm-tools-desktop. I say naively because I had no idea such a thing existed, nor do I understand why instructions to install open-vm-tools do not (or at least where I read them, do not) include mentions of this package.

Installing open-vm-tools on its own appears to be nearly useless - the desktop package makes the copy and paste function - probably the single most important function of VMTools - work.

So, there you go. Install open-vm-tools-desktop, and copy-paste should work

If your VM already came with VMware Tools pre-installed, but this still isn't working for you--or if you install and still no luck--make sure you run Workstation or Player as Administrator. That fixed the issue for me.

here is another solution I started using after being fed up with the copy and paste issue:

1. Download MRemote (for pc). this is an alternative to remote desktop manager. You can use remote desktop manager if you like.
2. Change the VMNet settings to NAT or add another VMNet and set it to NAT.
3. Configure the vm ip address with an ip in the same network as you host machine. if you want to keep networks separated use a second vmnet and set it's ip address in the same network as the host. that's what I use.
4. Enable RDP connections on the guest (I only use windows guests)
5. Create a batch file with this command. add your guest machines:

vmrun start D:VMMySuperVM1vm1.vmx noguivmrun start D:VMMySuperVM2vm2.vmx nogui

save the file to startmyvms.cmd

create another batch file and add your vms

vmrun stop D:VMMySuperVM1vm1.vmx noguivmrun stop D:VMMySuperVM2vm2.vmx nogui

save the file to stopmyvms.cmd

6. Open Mremote go to tools => External toolsAdd external tool => filename will be the startmyvms.cmd fileAdd external tool => filename will be the stopmyvms.cmd fileSo to start working with your vms:

7. Create you connections to your VMs in mremote

Now to work with your vm 1. You open mremote2. You go to tools => external tools3. You click the startmyvms toolwhen you're done 1. You go to tools => external tools2. You click the stopmyvms external tool

you could add the vmrun start on the connection setting => external tool before connectionand add the vmrun stop in the connection settings => external tool after

Voilà !

Are you talking about drag and drop, when you say copy and paste?If yes, you can also use Rightclick on object on your main computer and click copy. And then you go into the Virtual Machine and Rightclick the position where you want the file to get copied to.
