It's pretty rare these days for games older than a few years to receive further patches and updates. However, Blizzard Entertainment is still committed to keeping their most popular titles working on modern hardware, which is why they've released a new patch for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos.

Warcraft III is now 14 years old after it launched in July 2002, supporting operating systems from Windows 98 to Windows XP. Now that most gamers have moved on to Windows 7 or Windows 10, Blizzard has released Patch 1.27a for the game that adds in compatibility for Microsoft's newer operating systems.

The patch also includes a new installer for Mac OS X 10.10 and 10.11, which now allows Warcraft III to work on modern versions of Mac. There are still some lingering issues with the game, such as minor graphical issues and issues with save game locations, but in general the game should work just fine on today's PCs, even those that aren't suited to gaming.

This won't be the final patch for Warcraft III. A developer for the classic game posted on Blizzard's Battle.net forums, stating that they're still working 'on a balance change and new map pool' which gamers will soon see in the form of a new update.

If you haven't played Warcraft III or want to revisit a critically acclaimed classic, you can buy a copy through Blizzard's online store for $10.

I contacted Blizzard the other day, and asked if i can buy these on battle.net. Nope, they said, get a physical copy of the game, they don't really care about Warcraft 1 and Warcraft 2 (actually they don't care about any Blizzard Classic games. Lost Vikings, Diablo 1, maybe 2 as well). I asked the support if they plan to lend these titles to gog.com, or something, they answered that it is not their responsibility, ask higher authority on forums. Meh. I don't think, that simple gamers could convinve Blizzard suits to such thing, but please GOG, could you do it? It would be a very good business for everyone. Blizzard? A lot of people would buy their older games again, they would get money for them again. Gog? A lot of people would instant buy all of them - that would be a lot of money. Players? Well, i needless to say why we would win in a transaction like this. :D <br />So please contact Blizzard!

@ kai101m5 <br />Actually Warcraft Orcs & Humans IS Abandonware. The reason you don't see it all over the place is because it's DOS based. Abandonware doesn't mean that the old copyright doesn't exist, it means that the company has abandoned the software. Much like Windows XP has been abandoned. Blizzard doesn't CARE about WAR1. The product entered 'end of life' a long time ago. Hell, it was released in 1994. Blizzard is no longer supporting Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, nor are they supporting Warcraft 2 (DOS) anymore. In fact, technically, Blizzard doesn't support the <a href='http://Battle.Net' target='_blank'>Battle.Net</a> edition either. The DOS versions simply won't run without an emulator, but if you can get a copy of the <a href='http://Battle.Net' target='_blank'>Battle.Net</a> edition of Warcraft 2 + Beyond the Dark Portal, you've got a good chance of running it on more contemporary hardware.

Ok, for those idiots claiming WC1 is abandonware, it is NOT!! The copyright holder still exists and is active with that franchise so those people saying you can play all you want kindly stfu or get a law degree. <br />Gog, if you can make this happen, please do so. While it's unlikely we'll see WC 1/2 on GOG anytime soon, it would be great to have a place to easily get them without paying a large amount for them 2nd hand (in addition to running on modern systems). I've seen a few people labeling these as 'Abandonware', but they're still technically under some form of copyright, and thus, only legally obtainable second hand.
